Literary analysis of the melt The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams - Essay ExampleToms expresses his frustrations through his drinking and attending the movies in the evenings in addition to writing and reading poetry at work. A good amount of the happen centers on Laura, however. She is tremendously shy, to some extent due to her crippling disease (pleurosis). She wore a brace on her stagecoach and walked with a limp spending a lot of her time fantasizing about her glass menagerie. One of the central concepts this story clearly projects is the notion that the memories of our youth influence our fantasies of the present which in turn protect us from the realities of the present.Tom explicitly affirms that this is retentivity play in his first words, the first words of the play The play is a memory (I, 145). To promote that effect, Williams continues to permit Tom to detach himself out from the play from every so often to narrate particular events or ideas, bring the audienc e up to speed on what has occurred in the period between two of the scenes or make other remarks. In reciting how the impression of memory is achieved, Richard Vowles (1958) describes its dreamlike characteristics, One scene dissolves into another. There is, indeed, almost a submarine quality about the play, the kind of poetical slow motion that becomes ballet and a breathless repression of feeling that belongs to everyone but Amanda (54). Williams illustrates the way memory has functioned to stock Toms impression of life, never allowing him the escape he sought after through the merchandiser marine by sustaining the concept that almost the entire play is a Toms memory in clear focus by means of this otherworldly light.Laura lives in possibly the most clear life of illusion as she drifts through her existence ostensibly in a cloud of detachment. She connects neoclassic music with a happier time in her life while she connects her time in school with the roar of her leg brace wh ile she struggles into her music room. She takes refuge in

Tax based accounting has less rules and passs it easier to see where you stand at any given point of the year with taxable income, it does not, however, dependably report all liabilities and assets.Considerations When choosing which form of accounting to use for your personal or business needs at that place are several points to consider. If your business must issue financial statements to investors, GAAP provides greater consistency in the reporting, as it is guided by industry standards and not subject to the many change s that occur in tax requirements on a yearly basis. If you are newly in business, or if you are just solution to use an accounting method in your personal life, you may want to utilize GAAP standards, as it will allow ou to begin to see how money is used in all areas of your life and business. If you are established in your business and do not need to issue financial statements, or your personal budget is adequate and realistic to your living needs, the simpler tax accounting methods may be better for you as your focus will remain on what is needed to successfully file taxes at the end of for each one year, and you do not need the masses of data associated with tracking every financial transaction that occurs during the year. good InsightTax accounting, also known as OCBOA (Other Comprehensive Basis of Accounting), also includes a method of accounting known as cash basis. It is rare that any business can succeed basing its accounting on cash. The intricacies of financial transact ions and the necessity of looking for non-cash based deductions come tax time make cash based tax accounting impractical. Note that all standards for accounting are set by the IASC (International Accounting Standards Commission). Differentiate between tax dodging and tax escape valve.Since the passage of the first income tax law, tax accountants, lawyers, and business persons have concerned themselves with choosing among the various forms a transaction may take. Tax planning is the attend of arranging an individuals transactions in such a manner as to maximise the individuals after-tax income. This process is called tax avoidance, and it is a legal and legitimate pursuit. Some persons choose to rationalise their obligations and the clear provisions of the law, and their actions often result in Tax Evasion.Tax evasion involves fraudulent or criminal behavior as well as conduct involving deception, concealment, or destruction of records. Tax evasion occurs when the taxpayer avoid s payment of taxes that are legally due and owed under tax laws, either through underreporting income or form of address deductions to which they are not entitled. The English precedents were relied on repeatedly by Indian courts as well. Tax avoidance was thus seen as a permanent right of assessees. Then came the turbulence, temporary though. The Supreme Court, in the McDowell Co Ltd vs CTO (1985 154 ITR 148 SC) grounds, said that time has come to depart from the old thinking. It said even tax avoidance is braggart(a) and deserves condemnation. The apex courts justification for this being, the House of Lords, the highest judicial forum of English, has given a go-by to the principle laid garbage down by the British courts (in Duke of Westminster case). Since tax avoidance as a legal route was rejected by the very country of origin, it does not merit any better treatment in India, the Supreme Court held. The adverse legal consequences of this judgment for taxpayers were enormous. First, it came from the highest court of the land and, therefore, binding on all lower courts and Tribunals. Two, the McDowell case blurred the distinction between avoidance and evasion. The Department, of course, welcomed the ruling. It repeatedly tried applying this case, as only the Supreme Court can undo the McDowell case, if at all. And fortunately the apex court did reverse the findings in the McDowell case in Union of India vs Azadi Bachao Andolan (2003 132 Taxmann 373 SC).It was argued before the Supreme Court that the McDowell case had changed the face of fiscal jurisprudence in the country. Therefore, for any tax planning, the court must strike down what is intended to and results in avoidance. Rejecting this argument, the apex court upheld the legitimate rights of taxpayer in tax avoidance. In the process, it found that the McDowell ruling was nothing elisional but only an exception to the well-settled law.

Mathematics, the Connection Between Art and Science Essay Example for Free
Mathematics, the Connection mingled with Art and Science EssayAlthough there are many differences that set art and science apart, they appropriate one undeniable commonality. This bond that is present between what is otherwise considered as polar opposites is mathematics. As shown in Professor Vesnas lecture, mathematics is imperative to the development of art. Through math, artists have come to understand perspective, proportion, and geometrics. In terms of science, mathematics is the foundation which every theory stands upon. Nature, humans, and the digital world would have been impossible to shroud without numbers to bridge the gap between the unknown and the understood. Truly, mathematics is ubiquitous and continues to prove its importance to this day. A novel amalgamation that consists of mathematics, art, and science is music.Milkman, an artist of the mash-up genre, is a musician that samples different songs and digitally accepts them to form a brand new track. In a wa y, his work is described as an example of cross price reduction or convultion which according to Burk is some aspect of one sound superimposed on another. To harmoniously combine two different songs, one must fully understand every possible correlation in terms of rhythm, melody, and lyrics. And with mathematics and science making the technology available, the art of mashing up songs has become readily social and requires but creativity to create the next hit single. Mathematics has almost an infinite range of applications in society today. For example, Robert Lang presents mathematics as part of the core that drives origami, the art of folding paper. Lang shows that complexity is irrelevant with mathematics to dictate origami, anything can be shaped. Because of its practicality of compacting large things, origami is used in various sectors of science which include telescope lens packing and heart stents. Another example of maths prevalence is Theo Jansens initiation on his kine tic sculptures. His biological art, able to move independently, essentially redefines the wheel. Not only is it artistic just now also it is a masterpiece of engineering just a simple push can impress a massively heavy structure across difficult terrain. It is evident that math not only facilitates the evolution of artistic creations but also helps apply them as potential solutions to problems of today.

The Difference Between Two Orphans Essay Example for Free
The Difference Between Two Orphans EssayLast week, every newspaper in Korea printed two American names with two Korean faces. But Toby Dawson and Jae Harrell make the newspapers for very various reasons. all(prenominal) year, Korean orphans are being adoptive by American parents. Last year alone, an estimated thousand half a dozen hundred and thirty children were taken in from S discoverh Korea to America. This is not so surprising, considering that Americans form been adopting orphans from South Korea from a long way back. This is where Toby Dawson and Jae Harrells stories begin. Both of them have been born in Korea, and two have left their country when they were adopted by Americans. They both tangle loneliness and isolation suddenly, they found themselves in another country with nobody they knew, with a language they do not understand, and with people who looked so opposite. They grew up realizing that it was them who looked different in this world of Caucasian people they were Americans, merely their faces revealed their heritage. We can imagine how they suffered not entirely with the fact that they knew they were adopted and were having issues with their identity as to who their biological parents were and where were they and why they were separated from them, but growing up in a different country and being reminded of that fact everyday as they look in the mirror, they must have felt the pang of isolation more vividly. But whatever pain they felt, the similarities they shared ended there.Toby Dawson was born Bong-seok in Pusan, South Korea. His mother, Kim Jae-su, was a truck driver. On one fatal day, his mother lost him in the market. By the cadence his father got home from work, it was already too tardily to look for him. His father searched for him in the market and nearby places, in different orphanages, but to no avail. Defeated, his father gave up looking for him. But the fates must have smiled at Bong-seok, because soon an Americ an couple, ski instructors mike and Deborah Dawson. The couple took him to their home in Vail, Colorado. He was three. Toby did not know English, and for the first year that he stayed in the country he had nightmares, screaming in his sleep almost every night. Everything was so different the culture was different, and he was living with adoptive parents when he knew he used to have parents back in Korea. He struggled with his sense of identity, with being different, with being adopted, with being a minority in this part of the world. He accepted his situation and decided to make the best of it. He attended spend camp for adopted children from South Korea and other Asian countries, and made friends and shared bonds with other children like him who were going through the homogeneous ordeal. He learned to ski at a young age, although probably because his parents wanted him to learn how to ski, but eventually skiing became an outlet for his aggression. Toby worked hard on his skiing he has had his share of accidents and modest bones, but still he keeps at it to be bed the best in his field. He has competed in the study skiing competitions like the World Cup Circuit, and even won a bronze in the Olympics. He also has not forgotten the pain he endured in his childhood whenever he has time, he spends it with the kids, volunteering for the summer camp that helped him so much before. It seems that everything is going his way, and the only thing left is to make peace with his past. And after his Olympic fame, Toby finally decided to meet his parents. With his new status, a lot of Koreans came forward to study him as their own, but genetics has a way of clearing things up, and soon Toby found out who his real father was. Toby and Kim met, together with his younger brother. He did not reproach his father for abandoning him instead, he even told him I have been waiting a long time, Father. And Kim was moved and proud to see that disdain everything, his son has grow n up to be a wonderful man. Toby Dawsons story is made known to all of America last Tuesday in Oprah. But with all the good fortune that has come his way, it must be remembered that Toby worked hard to make the best out of what lifespan has to offer. He go about life and all its challenges bravely, and for that he is reaping the fruits of his labor. On the other hand, things did not fare as well with Jae Harrell. follow when he was a newborn baby by Ruth Harrell and her husband, Toby must have felt isolated just like Toby when he was growing up when he realized that he did not look like his parents, that he looked different. Unlike Toby, Jae took a different path. Whereas Toby spent his time in summer camp to cope with all the things that are happening to him, Jae turned to drugs and alcohol. Whether for fun or consolation or he just needed to forget, Jaes reliance on alcohol and drugs did him no good, and soon he was on a list for mental health watch. He let penitence and hatred overcome him, and perhaps he felt anger towards his parents in Korea who sent him away, and maybe he felt anger too with the position he found himself in this country, and he had no reproductive outlet for his aggression. Charged and found guilty of retail theft in November, he was sentenced to three historic period in jail but was granted parole last January. But he did not chip off there. His anger took over him and he ended up killing his mother, the one who adopted him and raised him up.Jae had been supercharged with battering his mother Ruth a year ago, but the charges were dropped after his mother declined to show up in court. This time, she was not so lucky. After an argument with Ruth, Jae struck his mother with a hammer on the head and then strangled her. He put her in her car and drove her to local grooms parking lot, and checked back if somebody found her. Seeing that the body was not discovered, he drove the car to I-290 and left it there. The car and the body were found by a worker from the Illinois subdivision of Transportation, and Jae Harrell has been arrested and bail set at $ 300 million.Toby Dawson and Jae Harrell were both orphans, both adopted from South Korea. They both had a difficult time adjusting to their situation here in the United States. However, they led significantly different lives. It was the decisions they made that took them where they are now. Tobys effort, hard work and optimistic attitude made him a successful skier and gave him happiness. Jaes negative attitude, his reliance on drugs and alcohol, and his failure to see the good things in life gave him disgrace and this tragic affair. In the end, it does not count where we are from or what we look like because what matter is what we are inside.

On Theory of Brief History of Translation Essay Example for Free
On Theory of Brief History of translation EssayIn general, since valet de chambre started translation activities, the study of translation has never ceased. Discussions about translation engender become so stalk that various translation theories have been formed gradually in Chinese. In this paper, Habermass theory of communicatory execution reinterpreting the concept of the savvy of translation studies, and Translation to indicate this special form of cross- heathen intercourse in how to effectively interpret metaphor. Keywords theory of communicative action metaphor comprehension translation1. ensnargoningTranslation is a metaphor of nomenclature as the carrier of the cross-cultural communication activities, but as well as a lecture that will carry the message to another language to the inter subjectivity of communicative action. Inter subjectivity of communicative action for the research, after Germany modern philosopher Habermass theory of communicative action (Theory of colloquy Action) undetermined the door for people new window. The theory is swelling in different philosophical ideas and views to take a carriage based on the creation of a complex, multifaceted rational alliance system, it understood as the center field language, based on critical theory of the financial community, general pragmatics, social evolution theory as a unified framework.2. Under the theory of communicative action the concept of translation studies to study2.1 Translation studies in the new way AC Zhu act theory. Translation Studies from the traditional structural linguals semantic stage to stage, the development of transmission 90 to the 20th century de social structure of the stage, after a prolonged abut. Semantic translation of the traditional paradigm by the impact of the classical theory of knowledge, that man is the soul, the perceptiveness of the object is totally dependent on the translators subjective feelings, emphasizing the translators get a lineing and inspiration, emphasis on opinion and Trans organic law, had gained the so-called flash in the pan. Because it is too much emphasis on the translators initiative to make this cross-cultural communication activities translate into a mystical practice.80 years of the 20th century, structural linguistics in China set off a new upsurge in Translation Studies. People started to salary attention the text, try to use linguistic analysis methods instead of intuitive feeling that in the mingled hidden behind the words of a universal and regularities, as long as it can conceal the expression of all, making the translation into a simple mechanical operation, that is, the semantics of a target language ar stored in the opening language and regulations put a rule in the semantic content of pattern into the preparation of.Obviously, such a tool and went to the other extreme too much emphasis on language as the object of the role of law, then followed by the fierce critici sm of the ideological trend. deconstruction gives people a new way of thinking. It broke social structure, deconstruction of the system so that the provisions of one(a) dollar to diversify the situation, the logical name translation from the language of Sri Lanka fetters doctrine, but still it will be translated once again into the irrational, too much publicity consciousness, so that interpretation becomes an infinite delay activity, the empathizeing and ex trades surrounded by people seems to have become impossible. How to overcome this ideology of intolerance, effective language as speciality of intercultural communication activities? I believe that the use of Habermass theory of communicative action, for the translation of research to find a new way of reason.2.2 Translation understands the concept of re-interpretation. A French translator said The translation is to understand and make people understand. Building mind is the cornerstone of translation is the first step in the influence of translation, not a good consciousness of the translation step. When we think the theory of communicative action has opened a new translation of the windows, it is necessary to understand the concept of re-interpretation.Habermas believes that the language as a intermediate of social interaction, verbal communication to understand each other, or far from effective communication. Communicative action in the language, that language, the analysis can be regulated. Each talk acts and financial statements have the effect the dual structure. Purposes of sectionalisation as the main statement, in the communication layer between the main body and vice statement as differentiate of statement, in the main contents of the table between the layers. Part of the implementation of quarrel acts in a decisive role, because it limits the relationship between language and the bear in minder, but too the nub of the polity of the contents of the statement. The 2 structures i n the speech act are interdependent.Sometimes words that are a part of which may be stressed, but it does not mean denying other part, but it tho temporarily relegated to a secondary position. For example, my phone shelling died, the phrase, seemed to be merely stating the fact that mobile phone battery is dead, but in fact it implies a variety of behavioral significance because the battery died, so I just did not pick up the phone I essential go recharge I will not carry a cell phone and with PHS, the PHS something please call me. This is the hidden part of the implementation of, According to the specific situation it would serve the adjudicates of this or that effect.Searle that the idea of the original speaker, or indispensable intentionality is converted to words, statements, signs, symbols, etc., these words, statements, signs, symbols centreful to speak out if they have a From the speakers thoughts in the derived intentionality. They not only have the traditional ling uistic sense, but also with the intention of the speakers meaning. This is undoubtedly the words of Habermas and similar to the dual structure theory. Accordingly on the significance of sagaciousness is also necessary to double the corresponding division. Understand a word should be divided into two to look at the presentation layer is the kn throw what on the issue, and in the communication layer is the know-how of the problem. know -what is the statement that those who understand how to reach such a promiscuous knowledge and understanding that it can acquire the knowledge from the perspective of those who understand, to ask him to be able to understand semantics, syntax, rules, line up the words, statements, mark the symbol what constitutes the meaning. know how is the statement that those who have the ability to construct or implement the ability of this speech act is an implicit awareness of the rules from the perspective of those who understand, to ask him who can understand the speech of this implicit awareness of the rules. In this dual understanding, understanding of the content of verbal expression is an understanding (know-what), but to those who truly grasp the inner speech must(prenominal) enter double intentionality level understanding (know-how), that is part of the implementation of the understanding. Therefore, understanding can not be stuck in the form of a priori judgments must be reached in the communication process. to understand the goal is to guide a recognition that the sharing of knowledge, cuss each other, the two international interdependence consistent with the subjective. It not only includes the traditional understanding of linguistic expressions, but also in connection with each other that the normative discourse related to the appropriateness of the background, and between the two main some kind of coordination , and the two participants in the process of communication is something the creation to reach understanding, and th e intention to make himself understood each other. 3. MetaphorsHabermass theory of communicative action on the construction of translation studies methodology has the macro guidance of translation practice is also instructive significance? enchant of the Newmark said, metaphor translation is a microcosm of all the language translation, because translation to the translation of metaphor methods were showing a wide range of choices either transfer its meaning, or reshape its image, or a modification of their, or their meaning and image of the perfect combination. The following instructions will use the metaphor theory of communicative action in cross-cultural communication The Interpretation of.Metaphor is a phenomenon of language use in the mental lexicon not found in metaphor. Metaphor from the modern conduct of view of science should be in the form of metaphor with the exception, belong to different categories in the semantics, logic dislocation, resulting in a semantic conflict, and when the listeners have responded to the conflict, it generates a metaphorical sense, that is a metaphor to understand the words. For the metaphor of the operating mechanism, it was actually make such a description Metaphor involves two different areas (areas) concept the production of metaphorical meaning is the result of the interaction between the two concepts. This interaction by use the way in the mapping process, belonging to a related concept and structure of the field was transferred to another area, the final after the make-up of a new synthesis of conceptual structure, that is, metaphorically. And this mapping and integration process is based on two areas of similarity in some respects. This is no doubt that the understanding of the need to double by metaphor. The process of understanding metaphors consist of two parts the identification and metaphorical meaning metaphors inference. In fact this is a secondary level of understanding into the process of understanding. Give an example of people often referred to The tongue is a gouge , from the presentation layer of understanding (an understanding), tongue by the American Heritage Dictionary defines this way the fleshy, movable, muscular organ, attached in most vertebrates to the floor of the mouth, that is principal organ of taste, an aid in chewing, and swallowing, and, in human beings,, important organ of speech .We can say that the tongue is an important organ as the human body, the first and most vertebrates have the same taste and chew and auxiliary swallowing function, in appurtenance to, or who have speech capabilities important language organ. to the basic meaning of the center, tongue behind the formation of the word meaning a large collection it can mean something shaped like a tongue, such as tongue of flame (flame), guiding tongue (rail-oriented switch rail), switch tong (switch to copper), can also refer to human speech acts and speech capabilities, for example, hold ones tongue ( keep silent), lose ones tongue (lose the capacity to speak, as from shock). The other key words in the speech act of fire, in the American Heritage Dictionary can be found in the following definition a rapid, persistent chemical substance change that releases heat and light and is accompanied not flame. the same , the meaning behind it can be found in the collection, such as, cooking fire (cooking fire), forest fire (forest fire), wild fire (wildfires), the fire of stem fire), and other specific forms of the fire. You can also find other meaning, such as the boy is liberal of fire (which decided the boy is very warm and excited), He was on fire for mismanagement (because of inadequate management and blamed). When the tongue and the fire both carry the meaning of their huge collection of words is enter in the basic language of A is B frame (sentence) to go when the logical relationship between the two on the adoption of is, to interact. Is used to denote a equivalents. it literally , or change a point of view, the presentation layer from the listeners understanding of the term should be reasoning as follows the tongue is a fire . is meaning that the two sets is in some ways equivalent. However, we are both from the above understanding of the meaning of the word of view, they clearly belong to two different categories, among them with a is connected, the the equivalent of conventional logic does not work, so from the presentation layer, we can identify this is a metaphor, thus completing the first part of understanding metaphors. When the listener is clear that to use metaphorical language behavior, the expressed will of the true meaning of metaphors to infer, that understanding will enter the second stage of course, understand the purposes of this part of speech acts, understanding the original speakers thoughts, or inner intention. Can be assumed that if The tongue is a fire is said to give an artificer is accused by the media to listen to, then the speaker or may contain a appealing glance report of intention. Artists are always much media attention, due to For various reasons, may be dark media, the exaggerated reports of certain facts, and spread such a report will be turned into a stumbling news and rumors, they will more or less to the artist himself or his cause to bring a number of trouble. The context is the equivalent of the tongue and the fire provides a logical possibility the tongue the language of human organs the words of the act media coverage people reported adverse reactions (Wei news and rumors) to the artists themselves or their cause trouble (damage to reputation or hinder the cause of development), the fire will shine the chemical substances excessive light and heat of fire, destroying things, or even result in death, so that both the devastation of the found a similar function, logical reasoning tenable. The tongue is a fire means a variety of popular artists and no shortage of opinions and statements in th e news or rumors coffee, they may attack their personality, or even because of their presence, the company lifted the employment relationship, or no one would dare ask this artistes. So we have reason to infer that the speaker is the issue of Renyankewei sigh, or cautioned entertainers say and pay attention to their own to avoid capture by the media hype after which her career. At this point, the listener to complete the original speech act of an effective understanding, guiding the listener and the speaker of some sort of recognition.Complete understanding of metaphor, must be made through an understanding (understanding of the content of verbal expression) to reach two to understand (the constitutional intentionality of the speech understanding of those). In the same language system is the case, between systems in different languages should be so, because only then can an effective cross-cultural exchanges. How should we operate on the self-evident metaphor translation, or the pr eservation of the source language metaphor, or metaphor replaces the target language, or to have the target language dominance feasibility, as long as it helps the reader to complete the intention of listening comprehension.3.1 Preservation of the source language metaphor. When the Metaphor and figurative language and translation in the source completely or intimately the same language, the metaphor for the body of the source language, target language readers will have to listen to listen to readers of the source language similar to the psychological Lenovo, and complete understanding of similar intent, target language are advised to preserve the source language metaphor. such as Links to Research (1) He is the only foxes. English fox, fox and Chinese refer to the same animal, when it was used as that person when they contain art in Italy, even listen to the reader and writer, said in a different language systems and cultural background, it can effectively understand the implement ation of the partial speech act be careful of this man, he is cunning. Another example (2) think store think tankThink tank in the Chinese culture does not exist in, but the library in Chinese culture, store things in the middle, so even though the people in Chinese culture has not been recognized with the library to depict the characteristics of thought The collection, but this library of knowledge to guide on English culture think tank , the identity, so library This Vehicle can save down. After all, this cross-cultural communication, we can not underrating the listen to the readers understanding, not to deprive them of their understanding of rights. In the translation process, in order to achieve the purpose of cross-cultural communication, and sometimes need to work to preserve the source language metaphor, that metaphor at the same time preserve the source language to make the appropriate explanation. Such as (3) What will it be when the increase of yearly production is brough t to a complete stop? Here is the vulnerable place, the heel of Achilles, for competitive production. (Friedrich Engels, The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844) If the complete cessation of growth in one-year production, what the situation is going to do? Like Achilles heel, as this will be the Achilles heel of capitalist production.

To the Lighthouse Essay Example for Free
To the Lighthouse EssayStyle for the writer as well as for the painter is a school principal not of technique, but of vision, says French writer Marcel Proust in his book Le Temps Retrouve. Proust belongs to the unify of early 20th century writers who rebelled against the structures of Classicism on prose by employing revolutionary styles in the narrative. Critics of Virginia Woolf trace her deflect to Proust, among other figures who share her distinct conception of verity and experience albeit the fact that there was no at once correspondence between the two writers. Virginia Woolf is a very individualistic and visionary writer (Friedman, 1955). The apparent law of similarity between her theory of reality and experience and that of the popular claims of or so of her contemporaries can only be accounted for by the fact that Woolf draws much from the zeitgeist. The idea of stream of consciousness, for instance, is not unique to her as Bergson, who authored durational flux, p roposes the same(p) idea that time is a continuous flux which is the theoretical basis for stream of consciousness (Friedman, 1955). Nonetheless, her browse remained distinctly hers specifically in terms of her style. It is because for Woolf the creation and fulfillment of a vision rather than a practice of technique matters most. Her bearing as a writer naturally followed her vision, her philosophy on flavor, reality and truth. In her body of work, she demonstrated what Proust claims to be the fountainhead of style. A very critical essayist, Woolf was very call about her vision. In her essay, Modern Fiction, published in 1925, she voices out her opinion on the issue of spirituality versus materialism by critiquing her contemporary English authors H. G. Wells, Arnold Bennett and John Galsworthy. She coined the label Materialists from their apparent lack of vision, their concern for trivial, temporary things, which to her escapes Life. She regarded their craft with respect but it was the objective to which their efforts were directed that she strongly opposed. She emphasizes the capturing of the spirit (or, as she put it, life or truth or reality, whatever we call it) to be the essence of art. The absence thereof incites the question whether that piece of literature is worthwhile and enduring.Woolf believes the preoccupation with trivialities is a manifest submission to the tyranny of the classics, the tradition and the canon. This would pissed stagnation and death. Woolf puts it better when she writes Movement and change are the essence of our being. Rigidity is death, conformity is death (Woolf, The commonality Reader). Described as essentially a lyrical young, To the Lighthouse reflects the totality of Woolfs vision of capturing the evanescence of life into prose (Mayoux 214).Critics of the novel refer to its non-prose qualities, i. e. its deviation from the conventions of unity of time, characterization and linear plot development, to draw novel whic h has a very thin plot. Williams (204) writes that the novel is more akin to poetry than prose because it attempts to make the moment something permanent. accord to him, this is a province of poets, musicians and painters and not of novelists (Williams 204).Interestingly, one of the characters in the novel, Lily Briscoe, is an actual painter and her character gives insight into the whole kit and boodle of the novel. The external plot of the novel is unusually thin for its length. Bennett aptly constructs the summary a group of tribe plan to sail in a small boat to a lighthouse. At the end some of them reach the lighthouse in a small boat(200). The novel is divided in tercet chapters. The first chapter, The Window, begins in summer at a vacation house by the sea, owned by Mr. and Mrs.Ramsay.On that occasion, their family along with a few friends gathered in the house for a party prepared by Mrs. Ramsay. Mrs. Ramsays son insists on going to the lighthouse, but Mr. Ramsay disappoi nts him by announcing that the weather would not get them. The rest of chapter describes the dinner interspersed with the thoughts of each character. The second chapter, Time Passes, is a description of the house and the memory imprinted in it after the characters introduced in the first chapter went their separate ways. The chapter is devoid of character action except for the incidental distress of the house cleaners. In the second chapter, Mrs. Ramsays death is announced. The third chapter, The Lighthouse, happens years after the first chapter. Mr. Ramsay, in concert with his children and two of their guests, including Lily Briscoe, revisits the summer house. Lily contemplates the completion of her painting as Mr. Ramsay leads his children on a boat ride to the lighthouse. The novel ends as Lily completes her work.

Historical Letter Essay Example for Free
Historical Letter try onWhat privileges do you enjoy today? Do you have air-conditioning when the sun scorches your back? Do you have heating machines when the cold bites you from deep inside? Do you have a vehicle that brings you to your destination without you having to hike ternion mountains or so? Which of these privileges do you take for granted? Its because you never experienced living without these privileges that you do not fully understand and appreciate their importance. What other rights do you have? Are girls let ined to go indoctrinate with boys? Are wo hands given access in the universities as men ar? Can women engage in careers that men are engaged in? Can women right to vote? I am Mary Ellise Scott. An eighteen-year-old bird from Pennsylvania. And through this letter I will ex desolate to you how different your era is from my time. There was a time when all these were deprived of women. Take for instance the right to vote. In the 19th century, in my cent ury, I am already am eighteen years old. But despite this fact, I am not allowed to vote I am not allowed to choose who will represent my needs in government. This is why in my century Carrie S. Burnham, a teacher and a physician took her case to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania on 4 April 1873. This was already the peak of her campaign, as she was already going around Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and all other cities in the country, speaking about this. I was just sixteen years old when she came and spoke in our township square. I always thought before that the order that things are in now, is thats what its say to be men vote and women dont, just because.I never thought of it in a perspective of inequality until I heard her arguments about it. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court rejected her arguments. Susan B. Anthony campaigned for the same rights, and ultimately got senators to amend the Constitution and finally allow women to vote. There are others who are like this during my time. There are many women who thought and realized that the handicap they are accorded on account of their sex is just plain unfair. One of these is Mary Church Terrel. Indeed, it is difficult to be a woman during my time. While we are already allowed to go the university and study, most of the parents who send their children who are women to school, just do the same for the sake of saying that they allow their children to go to school. But after graduating, their daughters are already to marry. She goes to the university to study how it is to be a level-headed woman of the house for the most part, and the other subject matters that would later on translate to a career, are disregarded. I fence those daughters lucky. At least they get to go to the university. For my case, arrest never allowed me to go to the university. He thought that my knowledge was more than enough to find me a good husband and allow me to become a good produce. Father thinks that this is the only purpose that a woman has. A woman, as my mother had to stay at home, attend to the chores and needs of the husband and the children. He tells me that I do not need some externalize education and some expensive diploma to allow me to do this. He tells me that I will take away about being a good wife and mother, by staying at home and helping my mother out.I want to be a doctor you know. But how can I do that when my father only believes that I am meant for the broom and the ladle. This is also why the men in the family are more valued than the women. Aside from the fact that they have all the privileges you can think of, fathers treat them differently. They are the favorites because for them the men bring glory to the family, as they bring home the money and as they have the chance to follow up on careers and become good at their fields, while women are just good for the house. There is a original repulsion that I feel deep inside, with the knowledge that there really is no substantial divergency between my brother and I, for him to be able to go to the university and for him to be able to vote. If he can find for his country, why cant I? Just because I am woman, I cannot vote. I do not see any logic in that. You see, you are lucky. You have everything you need and many more. So appreciate what you have and realize how difficult it was for us during this time to pursue something other than being homemakers. Women are not just for the brooms and ladle, we are for the books and for careers as well.
Realist style Essay Example for Free
Realist expression EssayThe winning spirit of our modern painting derives from Courbet. He was the individualist with strong elbows (George W. Chrystal, 1908). Courbet began the pragmatist movement when he exhibited his own paintings. By 1850 Romantic painting had become outstandingly affluent. Courbets painting based around what he witnessed at the funeral of his grand uncle became the first masterwork in the Realist style. mass were dulled with romantic and classical paintings. There was a strong desire among many multitude for a alone(predicate) painting, which sensibly portrayed the real world. When Courbet attended the funeral of his great uncle at Ornans, He was inspired and later multicolour the massive canvas, Burial at Ornans. It was one of the exceptional subjects in art illustrates an event with funerals. For his painting, he picked people as a model who had been to the funeral and created the new style. It leaves an impression of pragmatic style at the people of Ornans (Rubin 1997). People have mostly negative ambience with death and dying. Gustave Courbets underlying principle behind intromission of such realistic painting is to utilize artistic talent as a way toward self-awareness and to transubstantiate the customs, the ideas.Courbet did not want to commune any religious message with his work. Courbet viewed this work as not tho a funeral for his uncle, but in authentic truth a funeral for romanticism as a style (Rubin, 1977). Courbets paintings are generally viewed as realist one, increasingly concentrating on innocuous landscapes and seascapes for a bourgeois clientele. He had become extremely prominent during 1870 for his unique work. He captured middleclass marketplace by producing his painting on bombastic scale.Forgers also started flooding the market with fake ones. In the United States, Courbets art was exhibited more than a xii times by the mid-1870. The results were mixed sometimes he churned it out sometimes he didnt ( New York Times). Courbet pushed towards a realistic style and created different, rare look as compared to other paintings in general like classical or romantic. Gustave Courbet painted in a way, which allowed artists to paint the world around them as they saw it, rather than do it complicated to understand.Courbet established the right of the artist to be contemporary and unconventional, to be free from the need of adding an elevating thought or an imposed message to the representation of realism (Nochlin 1976). Courbets painting of a young man and an grey man breaking stones was a work of pragmatism which still had a trace of romanticism. He pictured the idea and the event without romanticizing it, just showing the workers engaged in their daily activity (Kleiner 2001). I am above all a total realist, he confessed on one of his many proclamations (Arthur C. Danto, 1989).Work- cited1) Arthur C. Danto Courbet Magazine act The Nation. Volume 248. Issue 3. Poem Comparison - Telephone Conversation Essay Example for Free
Poem Comparison band Conversation EssayThe context of this poem is of a black man from Africa trying to find accommodation, it is found on his experiences as a student in the 1960s. The poem is written from the perspective as a phone discussion between him and a landlady. The main problem in this poem is that thither is a huge amount of racism show by the landlady to the African How dark? Are you light or very dark? This shows immediately that the landlady has something against colou tearing people and cant have a conversation without sagacious the skin coloring of the man. It similarly receivems that the landlady would prefer the man not be coloured than to rather arrest money for the accommodation. The impression we get from the landlady tells us that she is a very racist and ignorant woman. She first shows this subsequently the man mentions hes an Africa, which she doesnt reply to Silence, silenced transmission of pressurised good breeding. The silence shows us her s imple summary of her resolution of having to think twice about accommodating the black man. She shows that she has a sense of racism in her thoughtful she was, varying the emphasis Are you dark? Or very light? This tells us that the landlady is trying to conceive of all the colours he could be and shows she judges people totally on colour. We also see that she is wealthy and c bes about her image a lot Lipstick coated, long gold rolled bum holder piped. From the view of the man he would think she is also a snob due to the elan she is speaking to him and her questions. When the conversation starts it begins normally but is changed completely when the man says he is African Self justification I am African. This suggests that the mans skin colour is a sin which he is guilty of. He also retrieves that he needs to defend himself so far before the woman has started to ask any questions. Then subsequently the landlady asked him how dark he was he didnt k straightaway how to respond to her Button A, Button B, this shows us that the man is surprise and confused to answer the question just asked. After the man realises that the landlady has a sense of racism in her, he begins to become angry and compares it to the environment he is in Red booth, red pillar box, red double tiered. The red that he is describing represents his feelings which means he is angry and the environment seems repulsive to him. When the man says akin plain or milk chocolate he is talking about his skin colour and at the same time making a clever joke out of it. He is also taunting the landlady and showing her that he is not going to put up with the racist questions any much. This shows that he is beginning to persuade the conversation and is now the mortal who is asking the questions. He shows this when he says his colour is West African mahogany tree and then asking her if she knew his skin colour. But as West African Sepia isnt a colour it tells us that the man is using his go to bedledge to make a fool of her. This makes him feel better due to the fact that he is now criticising her. Also, he feels he wants to make her feel the same way he felt when he had to answer the racist questions. The attitude of the man changes at the end of the poem from existence a polite and respectful to an angry and rude man. But he changes his attitude because of the landladys judgement of him and contumacious to show his angry and rage to show that he is not a weak individual. The man is now making fun of her and is mocking her at more length when he speaks about his colour Dont you know what it is? Thats dark, isnt it? He then starts to be rude by offering to show his bottom under the feigning of suggesting she meets him before judging My bottom raven black, wouldnt you rather see for yourself. He does this to make her feel self-conscious as he was before and tried to put her in a complicated position. The control of force out in the beginning of this poem was in the hands of the landlady as she owns the house and is offering the accommodation to the man. As the poem continues her power begins to decrease as the man reverses the situation as he starts to mock her. By the end of the poem the man has gained all the power from the landlady and is so powerful the landlady talks but yet when she is asked a question.I think the poet wrote this to show that people who seem to be weak like the African man could be clever enough to gain power. Also, people who are foreign to a acres still believe they have rights to fight back to unpleasant comments. You Will Be Hearing From Us ShortlyThe context of this poem is based on an call into question for a position at a company. The interview includes the interviewer and interviewees. The poem is written from the perspective of the interviewer asking questions to the candidates. The main problem in this situation is that there is a sense of prejudice shown by the interviewer to the candidates. Also, the candidates are not being treated fair to even off be considered the position at the company. Another problem is that in the poem people are judged on looks and appearance instead of their knowledge and potential. The impression we get from the interviewer is that she wants the interviewee to know that she is in charge and is the only person asking the questions. This is shown in the first stanza when she immediately asks her questions, which shows she has a much more superior attitude than the interviewees You feel adequate to the demands of this position. This shows from the start-off that the interviewer is in control and doesnt show any manners to wait for a response but instead asks the close question. The character of the interviewer develops into being rude and also she doesnt pay attention to the interviewees emotions or feelings. She shows that she is rude when she questions their looks and abilities Find your appearance, disturbing? She also is more direct in asking ques tions and doesnt hesitate of their reaction this is show hen she questions their accent And your accent that is the way you have always spoken, is it? This gives us the impression that she is injure the speech of the interviewee. The poet makes us think that the candidate is really weak and doesnt show any sign of fend for herself. Also, whenever the interviewer finishes asking a question she also replies for the candidates So glad we agree, Quite so. This shows that they are so incapacitated they cant be able to answer for themselves. It also shows us that the interviewees seem that they dont care about receiving chiding and do not have the power to stand up and respond. The character of the candidate develops into being more weaker than she is already. She receives more and more criticism from the interviewer and never has the chance to respond due to the interviewers power What of your education? Where were you educate? This shows the interviewer is now not even giving the courtesy of a response and instead goes straight onto the next question, showing the interviewees lack of importance to her.The control of power in this poem was in the hands of the interviewer in the beginning. As the poem continues her power gets stronger and stronger and becomes so strong that at a point youd forget that the candidates are even present. By the end of the poem the interviewer still has all the power possible in the interview and uses it to great effect against the interviewees.I think the poets reasons for writing this poem is to show people that a person who is in a powerful enough position to make judgements of people can have even more power by showing it and using it to their advantage.
