Society, in todayââ¬â¢s America, is constantly debating and never agreeing. Whether it be what phone is better, whom the president should be or who or if at all, we should be at war with; no one can unanimously agree on any topic in this country. This is no different then with the current hot topic of abortion. Abortion, although legal in this country, is still treated and viewed as taboo because of a dominantly Christian-American society. Some Christians make it seem that if you are pro-choice then you are pro-murder. However this is not the case. I will explain what abortion really is and why it is necessary that it stay legal. The history of abortion in America is a lengthy road full of twists and turns. TO begin, in the early 19th century abortions were relatively legal in America. Many states in the early 19th century began to restrict and then ban abortions for various reasons. The first state to make any restriction regarding abortion was Connecticut in 1821. Connecticut prohibited a harmful substance that caused a miscarriage after ââ¬Å"quickeningâ⬠. Quickening is the stage of the pregnancy when the fetus makes movements, such as kicking (Wilson). Other states began to ban this substance as well and abortions were becoming less and less legal countrywide. The last major anti-abortion legislation was passed in 1873. This legislation was called the Comstock law.
