The decision was made from the president that they were going to dope off the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 6, 1945. They chose to drop the bomb because if they didnt there would have been to a greater extent casualties than necessary in the continued fighting in the Asian theater of the war . Everyone thought that japan had lost just they didnt know that they refused to surrender and kept fighting. So more and more Americans were dying. The US felt like if they dont defeat japan soon that they will gain more gain over Asia or even in japan.
